Smoke coming out of the exhaust is a byproduct of a running machine. The color and thickness of the smoke can be used as an indication of the condition of the machine itself. A healthy engine fumes are colorless and invisible. When the smoke produced is thick and white, gray, black or blue in color, then there is some thing amiss with the machine. BLACK or GREY SMOKE Black smoke caused by imperfect combustion. It means: there are some amount of fuels left unburned. The left over fuels is jected along with the exhaust air, producing black smoke. In conclusion: black smoke can be a sign of fuel inefficiency, and the engine can not produces 100% power. Black smoke can occur when there is a problem with:
- Fresh air suppy for combustion due to dirty air filters, clogged or leaked intake manifold, or problems with the turbocharger, or worn valves.
- Exhaust piping, where there are obstacles on the exhaust or too many twists and turns in the exhaust pipe of air, so the air does not come out of the combustion chamber freely.
- Fuel injection system: improper injection timing, or problems with nozzles.
- Fuel quality. Poor quality or mixed diesel will certainly lower fuel’s flash point so it does not burn completely.
Black smoke is also an indication that the engine is overdue for an overhaul. ASAP PUTIH (WHITE SMOKE) Asap berwarna putih tipis adalah hal yang normal. Warna putih adalah uap air hasil dari kondensasi di dalam sistem pembuangan. Asap jenis ini seharusnya hanya muncul sebentar dan segera menghilang setelah tidak ada lagi uap air di dalam mesin. Tapi jangan re
mehkan jika asap putih keluar dengan tebal bahkan setelah mesin lama dijalankan. Hal ini mengindikasikan uap air secara aktif terbentuk di dalam mesin. Kesimpulannya: Asap berwarna putih dapat menandakan adanya gangguan pada sistem pendinginan mesin. Mesin yang terganggu sistem pendinginannya sangat rentan overheating yang dapat menimbulkan kerusakan sangat parah pada mesin. Asap putih dapat terjadi apabila:
- Temperatur kerja terlalu rendah.
- Kebocoran pada ruang bakar sehingga air pendingin masuk ke ruang bakar.
- Blok mesin retak sehingga air pendingin rembes ke ruang bakar.
- Kompresi pada ruang bakar rendah akibat silinder liner atau ring piston aus, atau masalah pada dudukan valve.
ASAP BIRU 
Asap berwarna kebiruan menandakan masuknya oli (minyak pelumas) ke ruang bakar. Masuknya oli ke ruang bakar bisa diakibatkan oleh:
- Kebocoran oli di turbocharger. Oli terbawa masuk ke ruang bakar melalui intake manifold.
- Oli terisi terlalu penuh.
- Ring piston atau silinder liner aus sehingga oli tertekan masuk ke ruang bakar.
- Keausan pada valve guide
